Database Administrator Profession

A company or organization with a great deal of data to be stored will need to hire a specific database administrator to make sure their information is always available. As this job is a relatively new position, there are different names that are used with different groups to denote the position. Other names that may be used to describe the job of a database administrator could include database programmer or database coordinator. The job duties also change from place to place and could overlap with the positions of programmer analyst, systems manager, database analyst, and the database modeler.

A person that would like to start a career as a database administrator will find that there are often not direct schooling requirements for the job. This is because much of the knowledge is gained in real life situations and not in classrooms. However, a person will need to have a working knowledge of various database languages, such as Microsfot SQL and others. In the case of SQL, it may be a good idea for the person to go through the Microsoft Certified program which adds proof that the person is capable in working with SQL. Some employers may require that the person be certified to work with database server software before being hired.

The duties of the database administrator job are usually technology intensive and have very little to do with customer interaction. The main job task is database maintenance and making sure that users are able to access the system and receive the information that they need. In addition, the administrator will need to perform backup operations from time to time to prevent loss of data in case of an accident. The position of database administrator is usually paid well as there are few people that have an intimate knowledge and experience necessary for a large database server.
