What Is A Database?

In technology terms, many people would like to know what is a database and how it can improve their overall computing experience. In actuality, most computer users interact with a database several times a day, especially those that use the Internet to get random bits of information. An example of database solutions for organized information can be found at a number of popular websites. One would be a movie website that lists many different movies and stores information about the films, such as the release date, rating, and the principal actors and actresses. Simply put, a database system is one that simply organizes a collection of raw information.

Before the Internet came into being and more people plugged into the cloud, the majority of databases were found on local computers. In addition, there were many programs that a person could use to create their own personal database of information. However, the problem with the early database software programs is that they were difficult to use and the upload of data could be a long and laborious process. With the Internet coming more into focus, new database software programs emerged that could automatically organize data based on several fields, thus reducing the time needed to populate the database with information.

On the cloud, most of the database websites are not actually called such. Instead of being listed as an information database, these websites will often have names relating to the content that is presented. A popular website, such as Wikipedia, is actually a database of information and the interior links found on individual pages are one way that the data is organized. A database system could also be more formal, as in the previously mentioned case of a movie website, or one that stores sporting statistics and figures for easy retrieval.
